Pull up a chair

Welcome to TexMex Cafe, a family-run kitchen on Benavides Street in San Diego, Texas. Not the big city out west. Our San Diego is a small South Texas town in Duval County, where folks know each other by name and a good plate of food is how you say hello. That is exactly how we cook here: like we are feeding family, because most days we are.

Every morning starts before sunrise in our kitchen. Tortillas get pressed by hand, beans simmer low on the stove, and our salsas are made fresh in small batches from peppers, tomatoes, onion, and garlic. Nothing fancy and nothing rushed. Just scratch cooking, the way this corner of South Texas has always done it.

Some folks pass through town and find us by accident. Most pull up a chair and stay a while. Either way, you will leave fed the way neighbors feed each other.

our story

A kitchen rooted in one small town

TexMex Cafe is run by Emilio Urupia and his family, and it grew out of a simple idea: that our town deserved a place where the food is made from scratch and everyone is welcome. Over the years, this kitchen has become the kind of place where the high school team stops in after a game, where neighbors linger over coffee, and where weekend plates get passed down long family tables.

Being in a small town means we are part of everything that happens here: church fundraisers, school events, birthday parties, and quiet Tuesday suppers alike. When you eat with us, you are supporting a local family, and we never take that for granted.

Catering for local events

We cater gatherings across Duval County and the surrounding towns: church socials, school functions, and family celebrations. Trays of our most requested dishes, cooked to order and ready when your guests are. Tell us about your event and we will help you plan enough for everyone, with a little extra, because that is the South Texas way.
